This service serves as an introduction to the Sacred Triduum. The word "tenebrae" means darkness, in reference to the darkness held in the heart of the Church during these days. The liturgy consists of psalms, antiphons, and readings, much of which is taken from the Lamentations of the Prophet Jeremiah.
